Baking soda…

Monday, December 31st, 2007

I never knew baking soda was such an all purpose household item.

I always thought of baking soda was that thing in the yellow box and it didn’t do anything but be in the fridge.

Now, I know it much much more.

The link I gave is a short list, if you want more… just google “baking soda”.

JIZZBOMB

JIZZBOMB

I’ve seen some funny wifi names, but this has to be one of the funniest. JIZZBOMB.

It’s like come’on… really…

Either the person has a good sense of humor, likes soggy biscuits, or is a big neighborhood slut.

If this person is a she and is a neighborhood slut, I’d like to meet this person. Just kidding… =)

But in any case, I’d like to find out why this person named their wifi JIZZBOMB. Cause if I was their friend, and I came over to chill or whatevers, and I had a laptop, I’d ask them how do I connect to their internet. They would respond by connect to “JIZZBOMB”…. I’d say “I will not”.

Speaking of funny wifi names, I read or seen one that says “Virus, do not connect to this wifi”. Thats pretty good, cause if I didn’t know better and was trying to connect to a free wifi, I would not connect to that one.

Or this other one where it says “Please don’t hack me”. Thats pretty funny cause they know people will get on that one, but asks nicely to not “hack” them.

Hahahah…. I’m a geek.

Midnight good eats

Sunday, December 30th, 2007

I enjoy a good midnight snack.  And tonight I had a midnight cereal.  Mmmm.

I’m not a big morning fan, but I enjoy eating breakfast items.  Pancakes, eggs, french toast, cereal… mm.

I am not vegetarian…

I just choose not to eat red/white/dark/the other/whatever meat.  The only type of “meat” I’ll eat is seafood.

Bye bye Windows… Hello Ubuntu 7.10 Gutsy Gibbon

Tuesday, December 25th, 2007

This is my customization of Ubuntu 7.10. Since I’m forgetful, this will be my cheatsheet in the future. The laptop is for a Dell 700m.

*Note: this is not a how to install Ubuntu, this is after the installation.

*I like to keep the ISO on local cause if I install anything new, I don’t have to get the CD/DVD

Create ISO from CD/DVD
$ dd if=/dev/dvd of=/path/to/file.iso

Auto-mount ISO (edit /etc/fstab) and add the following line
/path/to/image.iso /mnt/path/to/ubuntu iso9660 ro,loop,auto,user 0 0

Edit /etc/apt/sources.list to include ISO, and disable CD/DVD version

Put this line before cdrom and comment out (#) CD/DVD
deb file:///mnt/path/to/ubuntu/ gutsy main restricted

*I like KDE more than the default Gnome.

Install Kubuntu
sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop

Some problems with logging out, shutdown, rebooting
Change “intel” to “i810″ for device
$ sudo apt-get install 915resolution
If the xserver-xorg-video-intel get better, than we can use the intel drivers

Install console font for konsole
$ sudo dpkg-reconfigure fontconfig-config
$ fc-cache -f -v ~/.fonts
Reboot

Install MS fonts
$ sudo apt-get install msttcorefonts

*Since there is just one user (me), I don’t need a login screen

Auto login for KDE
$ sudo gdmsetup
Select the Security Tab,
Flag the “Enable Automatic Login”,
Select your name from the drop down menu,
Select Close.

*I like printing to PDF than to actual printers.  It saves paper and I can archive it better

Install PDF printer
Make sure the package is installed
$ sudo apt-get install cups-pdf
Make sure permissions are correct
$ sudo chmod 4755 /usr/lib/cups/backend/cups-pdf
Go to System -> Administration -> Printing
Add new printer.
Select the Generic, Postscript Color Printer
*Cannot print test page, it prints as root, print using app

*Since my laptop has speedstep, I want to add speedstep control

Add CPU freq utils (for speedstep)
$ sudo apt-get install cpufrequtils

Install firefox mplayer and remove totem
$ sudo apt-get install mozilla-mplayer
$ sudo rm /usr/lib/firefox/plugins/libtotem*

Install firewall
$ sudo apt-get install guarddog

Configure firewall
Start guarddog, then allow “DNS-Domain Name Server” for “Internet”

Naricago Dallrow

Monday, December 24th, 2007

Naricago Dallrow is Chicago, Heathrow (London), Narita (Japan), and Dallas.

My adventure started last sunday where my work called me to go observe our product. Basically, I would observe the our product real-time and log anything that didn’t work. That stuff is boring, so I’ll write about my adventures in Naricago Dallrow.

I had under 24 hours to get ready. It was pretty exciting. I would go from Chicago to Heathrow, Heathrow back to Chicago, Chicago to Narita, and finally Narita to Dallas.

I can’t write too detail about my trip, or else this would be a novel, so I’ll just write the stuff that stick out of my head.

Chicago is soooo cold. It was the coldest out of the whole trip. I wanted to eat the pizza there, but didn’t have a chance to get some local food. I just went to the hotel restaurant and ate a crab sandwich. I didn’t have a chance to see the Sears Tower or The Sky Deck. I did eat a pizza from the airport, but it wasn’t that good.

Heathrow is expensive; United Kindom in general. The dollar is weak compared to the pound. I had a fish pie (can’t eat meat pie, cause I don’t eat meat), London Pride beer and an appetizer at a local pub. The beer of choice, at the pub, is Fosters/ While exploring a local mall, I started to walk around the area, so while walking around the streets, I found an adult store. It wasn’t as cold as I thought it would be. People are nice there. Everybody says “Cheers” and “Cheers Mate”. I didn’t hear anybody say “bloody“, “loo” or “bloak” (sp?).

I saw the music video “And No Matches” by Scooter at the hotel. It’s pretty funny. “Alright, listen. Three men in a boat with four cigarettes. And no matches. How do they manage to smoke.” Yeah, this band does not look like a “Scooter”.

I also ordered room service after my long nap. I gotta say, room service is nice, but expensive. I got fish and chips and a ceasar salad. The fish and chips is just like any fish and chips. Nothing special.

Narita is nice. I’m glad I went back there again. I found the same ramen place that I ate last time. They got a bigger place and it was down the street. I was really hungry so I got the extra big portion. I should have gotten the regular size to save room for some sushi, but my eyes were bigger than my stomach again. On the plane ride there, I started talking to a flight attendant and she said that there was a really good sushi place next to the Aeon Mall. They were going to go and I should have gone there before I ate the ramen. When I went back to the hotel, I went to the bar to waste some time. I had desert there to. I have a picture of the bar, so I’ll post some pictures up later.

I was waiting for the shuttle back to my hotel, and white girl and guy comes over. They say something in japenese, and I say that I don’t speak japenese, and they go “Geez, does anybody know japenese” in a english/scottish/irish accent. I asked them in english where they were going and I knew where it was so I helped them. The funny thing is the girl had a bright neon yellow shirt that had a happy face on it. She also was wearing hip-hop clothes with a pink hat (tilted of course). She looked like a joke.

The flight from Narita to Dallas was 13 hours. Oh man, it was a very long flight.

Dallas’s airport is really nice. I think they remodeled it or something, but it’s nice. I was hungry and had enough time to eat, so I went to TGIFridays. I ordered fish and chips (the only thing non-meat), ceasar salad, green bean fries, and a beer. The waitress looked at me and ask how long I was there, and I told her for 2 hours, and she said okay.

Flight attendants are nice. They like to chat and one of them that I talked to were perverted. It was fun.

I couldn’t wait for my last flight home, from Dallas to LAX. After a week of flying, I just wanted to go back home.

Overall, even though flying around was for work, it was fun. I wished I wasn’t that tired so I could have enjoyed Chicago, Heathrow, Narita, and Dallas more.

Oh well, I think I’ll stop here.

In two years…

Friday, December 14th, 2007

What will happen in two years?

  • The company I co-founded will have a product that will help daily tasks.
  • I will be fincially secure and stable.
  • I will make *IT* happen.
  • I will give back to the community.

I’ve been reading about books on small businesses, online articles about entrepreneurs, and anything on leadership ever since I started the company. It’s a good feeling that after reading about them, we are putting the ideas into motion. I feel that since we did this, we are more goal driven, and getting more things done at a faster rate.

I am envious of, and look up to, entrepreneurs that made it. They give me motivation to always shoot higher than what I am capable of doing. I will be one of them.

There are many opportunities knocking everyday. I just have to open them.

Leah Culver

Wow… I just found a cute girl that’s a real programmer. A “real” programmer as in she is passionate about it and is good at it. She is the lead developer of Pownce.com and I think that’s cool.

The passion to learn new things is something that I like a person. Anyways… she just got one more fan.

Bank girl

Tuesday, December 11th, 2007

I’m procrastinating.  I have a final tomorrow that I’m pretty sure I’m ready for, but I need to make a cheat sheet.  It’s 10pm.  I’ve also just finished watching Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.  Awesome by the way…

Anyways… I don’t have a topic to write about, but there has been something on my mind recently.  And it is bank girl.

24 hours in Japan

Monday, December 10th, 2007

Over this past weekend, I went to Japan for one day. Yes… twenty four hours.

I had a general battle plan of what I was going to do in a short amount of time. I’ll start when I landed at the airport.

So… we landed and the pilot did a very good job; barely felt that. I got my personal item and carry-on and headed out the plane, but before I did, I talked to the flight attendent for work.
